Dubai Culture welcomes new event into the Emirates’ calendar of major initiatives
Dubai, UAE; November 16, 2015: The region’s most talked-about event dedicated to horology, Dubai Watch Week (DWW) – organized by Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons- has been hailed a resounding success. The five-day event welcomed more than 2,300 public attendees, including avisit by the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and the royal patron of Dubai Watch Week (DWW), Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum– Vice Chairman of the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture).
During the course of the week, HH Sheikha Latifa received a behind-the-scenes tour of DWW’s exhibitions, educational sessions and also attended a private watchmaking masterclass before concluding her visit with a look at the Art of Horology forum, which included insight from more than 30 of the world’s most respected decision-makers in the watch sector speaking across 16 panels.
Preparations for an event of this magnitude from inception to completion included more than 6,230 hours with 76 speakers flying in from 28 different flights. Supported by major partners (GPHG, Christie’s, Emirates Airlines, The Dubai Mall and Edmond de Rothschild) the first edition of DWW saw more than 790 pre-registrations; 340 for the panels, 240 for the VIP programme and 210 for the watchmaking masterclasses. The entire week included representation from across ten countries with 28 of the flights flying in from Geneva carrying some very special members of the horological world making their way to the Middle East for the very first time, including legendary watchmaker Philippe Dufour.
In addition to an unprecedented international presence, DWW’s educational initiatives set the bar for future editions with a monumental AED 396,684 raised by DWW’s official auction house Christie’s with the sale of the Hublot Vision I and Hublot Vision II Timepieces for the humanitarian initiatives of Dubai Cares.
To host a dozen brands is no small feat and DWW boasted a repertoire of 55 participating brands including three watchmakers; showcasing more than 242 total timepieces with 72 under the GPHG pre-selected timepieces, 102 vintage timepieces housed at The Dubai Mall exhibition and 68 limited edition pieces at the Rebels of Horology. This unique exhibition hosted by the independent brands included featured timepieces such as the Amadeo Tourbillion Collection by Bovet, the Endeavour Perpetual Calendar “Funky Blue” by H.Mosier &Cie, MB&F’s renowned Horological machine No.6 RT, Hautelence’s Invictus03, Cabestan’s Winch Tourbillon Vertical, Urwerk’s 210S, De Bethune’s DB28GS, Moritz Grossman’s Benu Tourbillon, GPHG Horological Revelation Prize winner Laurent Ferrier’s Galet Square and the timepiece that won the highest honour Aiguille D’OR or “ the Golden Hand Award” with Greubel Forsey’s Tourbillon 24 second Vision.
The UAE currently holds the 10th place in the world for Luxury Swiss Watch imports with 681.6M of Swiss Watch exports in the past year of January- September 2015. In order to continue increasing the awareness and appreciation for the watchmaking industry across the Middle East, the DWW event’s organizing committee is preparing plans to host Dubai Watch Week on a yearly basis.
